What is Breathwork?
Breathwork is a holistic practice that involves conscious, controlled breathing techniques to enhance physical and emotional well-being and to elevate one’s spiritual experience.
How does Breathwork work?
Breathwork is often used as a tool for stress management, emotional healing, and personal growth. It is typically done in a group setting with a proficient, well trained facilitator.
Note: it is vitally important to work only with a trained and integral professional to ensure your safety and effectiveness of the practice.
Fundamentally, breathwork is based on the understanding that the breath is fundamental to our survival and as such has a qualitative effect on our overall health and wellbeing.
By altering our breathing patterns, we can positively impact our inner experience, and in turn our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual dimensions.
Last, breathwork, particularly rebirthing breathwork (see below), is often used as a complementary therapy for a range of conditions, including addiction, depression, and trauma.
Does one size fit all?
There are many different types of breathwork techniques, including:
- Pranayama, an ancient yogic breathing technique that involves the conscious control of the breath to promote relaxation and spiritual growth.
- Holotropic Breathwork, a powerful, cathartic technique that uses fast, deep breathing to music in order to facilitate altered states of consciousness, personal growth and healing of trauma.
- Transformational Breath, also a cathartic technique that involves deep, full breathing, that is said to release trapped emotions and to facilitate a sense of well-being.
You’ve left out Rebirthing Breathwork
Rebirthing breathwork is the technique that I myself facilitate.
It’s also known as “conscious connected breathing,” and is a powerful self healing system that uses the power of our own breath (circular, deep, and connected breaths) to affect healing, personal growth, and to bring about a change in perception and the way we experience ourselves and the world around us.
What does a session look like?
Each session is different, usually lasting around 2 hours. During you will lie down in a comfortable position and focus on breathing in a circular manner (as is demonstrated to you), allowing the breath to flow in and out naturally. The breath may be progressively encouraged to become deeper and more continuous. The session ends quite spontaneously when all release has occurred, accompanied in all cases by a feeling of euphoric inner peace.
What are some of the benefits of Rebirthing?
Benefits include cessation of stress and anxiety, better sleep, improved energy, refocusing of life, healing of childhood conditioning, including the birth trauma.
